Review: Future Vistas – Second Sight Anthology #1

Author: Doug Pruden
Website: http://www.prudenauthor.com/
Genre: Near Future Science Fiction

It was refreshing and satisfying to work my way through this outstanding collection of scifi short stories. The writing style is clean and fluid, and the dialog is superbly crafted. The stories are imaginative and emotional with wonderful depth and insightful nuances to the characters.

Owen’s Gift” paints a picture of the early life of Mel Destin, the main character in the Mars Ascendant series. The author pulls no punches in describing the cruelty of the dirty backstreet underworld which shaped Mel and yet weaves a touching story against the backdrop of a harsh environment.

Throwing Stones” is the portrait of a middle-aged trader working an asteroid mining claim on his own. His sole companion in space is his AI which he reprogrammed to sound like his deceased wife. The tale is reflective and heartwarming, with an unusual twist at the end.

My personal favorite of the collection is “Goodbye is not an equation” which relates the story of two aging scientists who had been in charge of three alien visitors thirty years prior. The story is revealed through fond dialog and reminiscence on the eve of reconnection with the visitors and is charming and bittersweet in its resolution.

If you are looking for mature, well-developed scifi with plenty of heart, search no further. This is a great introduction to a talented author. If the Mars Ascendant series is as colorful as Future Vistas, I have a rich and rewarding reading experience ahead of me.

Erin MacMichael is a visionary science fiction author and artist, creator of the T'nari Renegades series of novellas, novels, covers, and artwork. Her lifelong quest has been to explore past the boundaries of conventional thinking and figure out what really has transpired on this planet. She has traveled extensively throughout the world and lives in the Pacific Northwest with her marvelous offspring.
