My disgust with the prevailing attitudes in the U.S. has only deepened over the last 40+ years. “America, Fuck Yeah” from the satirical film Team America: World Police pretty well sums up what I see in most of my countrymen and women. The lyrics are crude, rude, and, sadly, quite an accurate reflection of the foul-smelling, ignorant attitudes that I’ve grown up with. The very last line of the song (with a complete lack of cheering) is all-too-true, much to the chagrin of an author who writes kick-ass, life-changing, adult scifi. Sigh.

I very much believe in high ideals, truth, balance, fairness, and an expansive spirit. I’m waiting for my countrymen to get it. I will cheer just as loud as anyone else when America actually stands for those things and lives up to them.

America, Fuck Yeah

It’s very demoralizing to see such infantile nationalism and similar shallow garbage around us everywhere. Perhaps we are still “the Lucky Country” here in Australia, as we pride ourselves in saying, because these things are not as prevalent here – yet. But thanks to the media, this disease is spreading across the entire globe, and I’m already sticking fast to my ideals in the same belief that we can make a difference through positive intentions and actions. Thanks for the inspiring words, Erin!

I hope Australia stays that way, Barbara. Yay! Yes, some of us stand for something stronger and healthier than foolish posturing. In all my travels, I’ve done my best to show people that “American” can mean gracious, intelligent, and imaginative instead of just loud and obnoxious. A warm smile always goes a long way!

Europe has also sadly become similar and worse.

    • Erin MacMichael

That’s sad to hear, Pamela. It’s a problem that seems to be all too common around the globe. Most people are happy to crow about how superior they are to others when they have very little personally to show for it.

Sadly, the UK has become very similar – a nasty greedy society, lacking in compassion, repeatedly “kicking” the most vulnerable in our society when they are already in difficulties, destroying the institutions that represent the best of the UK, increasing the wealth gap between the ultra-rich few and the remaining many, and led by the “Nasty Party” with policies effectively dictated by the ultra-rich few who donate the majority of funding to the “Nasty Party”. Democracy? What democracy?

    • Erin MacMichael

Yes, Paul. It runs deep and dark in both of our countries and the truly sad thing is that most people cling to shallow garbage as part of their identity, adamantly choosing to remain blind, even cruel. That’s what this ridiculous song shows about my countrymen. Of course, the U.S. does not have a corner on thick and mean people. Hang in there and stick to your ideals. The best way to make a difference is through positive intentions and actions.
