This amazing cave, filled with enormous selenite crystal formations, was discovered in 2000 by miners nearly a thousand feet below Niaca, Mexico. Because the caverns lie on a fault above an underground magma chamber, the high humidity and temperature which rises to 136° F have made exposure difficult, if not lethal, for any length of time without proper protection.

Incidentally, it was reported this month that the mining operations which kept the caverns drained (at an enormous cost) have ceased, so the cave is once more submerged and inaccessible. Our glimpse into one of the planet’s most spectacular creations was short-lived. Unfortunate for us, but fortuitous for the magnificent crystals which were deteriorating in open air.
