The Hidden Life of Trees: The Illustrated Edition

Author: Peter Wohlleben
Website: https://www.peter-wohlleben.de/
Category: Biological Sciences / Photography

I was fortunate enough to receive this book as a gift from my sister for Christmas. She couldn’t have given me anything cooler!

This book is mind-blowing! A 5-star find, all the way. This is not your average “coffee table” picture book. The collection of photographs of trees, forests, fungi, and landscapes is indeed nothing short of stunning, but what caught me off-guard was the truly astounding findings and thinking of Peter Wohlleben (quite aptly named, I might add). From the very first page, I found myself drawn into stories, observations, studies, and research about the vast network of intelligence inhabiting the forests of our planet. I’ve always been in awe of trees, but Wohlleben’s insights made me feel five years old again, standing at the edge of a rich, unfathomable world I could barely perceive. Do trees communicate? Do they send out alarms in the face of danger? Surprisingly, they do. Do forests have a complex social structure? Most definitely, yes. Are humans painfully ignorant of the lives and needs of these magnificent, thinking beings? Without a doubt.

Not for the first time, I was reminded that we, as a race, have barely begun to understand the intricate world we have the privilege of living within and our arrogant, irresponsible behavior toward life here causes deep pain. We have a long way to go if we are to claim the title “evolved.” Wohlleben and his colleagues have given voice to the Earth’s forests and I am grateful to have a new understanding of the teeming community right outside my windows. If you revel in fresh thinking like I do, then buy this book and read it cover to cover. You’ll be stronger for it.

Erin MacMichael is a visionary science fiction author and artist, creator of the T'nari Renegades series of novellas, novels, covers, and artwork. Her lifelong quest has been to explore past the boundaries of conventional thinking and figure out what really has transpired on this planet. She has traveled extensively throughout the world and lives in the Pacific Northwest with her marvelous offspring.
